Kamala Harris
Kamala Devi Harris born October 20, 1964) is an American politician and lawyer who is currently the 49th vice-president of the United States. She is both the first female vice president and the highest-ranking female official of the United America. Harris is a member of the Democratic Party and was previously the attorney general of California between 2011 and 2017. In addition, she served as a United States senator representing California between 2017-2021. Harris was born in Oakland, California, Harris graduated from Howard University and the University of California, Hastings College of the Law. Her career began with the Alameda County District Attorney's Office. Harris was later promoted to the San Francisco District Attorney's Office. In 2003, she was elected San Francisco District Attorney. In 2010 Harris was elected Attorney General for California. She was reelected in 2014. Harris was the junior United States Senator from California between 2017 until 2021. Harris defeated Loretta Santiago in the 2016 Senate election and became the second African American woman to serve in Congress , and the only South Asian American American to do so in the United States Senate. As senator, Harris fought for federal de-scheduling of healthcare, and legalization of cannabis as a pathway to citizenship of undocumented immigrants, as well as the DREAM Act which bans assault weapons. In the news, attention was paid to her outspoken questions of Trump administration officials during Senate sessions. This included Trump's second Supreme Court nominee Brett Kavanaugh who was accused of sexual abuse.
